WP Hope Rest Will Spark Turnaround

Vodacom Western Province get the second half of their Currie Cup campaign underway this weekend with lots to do to reach the playoffs. They'll probably also need a bit of lady luck to book them a spot in the semi's.

Province could only manage three wins out of seven matches in the first round and have only 17 log points to show for it, far less than the top four who seem to be well on their way to the playoffs. The men from the Cape will have to win all their matches well and hope one or two of the big teams stumble along the way.

They start their near impossible task against the Blue Bulls ! at Loftus on Friday night, a side they beat 26 - 17 in the first round at Newlands. They then take on log-leaders the Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, a side they also beat in the first round. But the sides had to play on a wet Newlands in the lowest scoring match of the tournament so far.

Province will rue those two losses to Griquas and the Valke, two of the so-called Minnows in the Currie Cup, in the first round. Good wins there could have put them in the top three at this stage of the tournament. But rugby's a strange sport and results are often determined by the bounce of the ball and Province will be hoping it bounces right for them in the latter half of the Currie Cup.

Kick off against the Blue Bulls on Friday night is at 19h10.
